What are smart meters?
Smart meters measure the gas and electricity you’re using, just like your current meters. The smart part is they also report to a useful portable screen (an In-Home Display), giving you your energy usage in near real time, so you can see exactly what you’re using. These meter readings get sent to us, your energy supplier, so you don’t have to.
What's so great about smart meters?
There’s no charge to have your current metering replaced with smart metering and to be issued an In-Home Display (IHD).
Manage your energy
With the useful In-Home Display you can see how much energy you’re using and how much it costs. You can compare time periods and with it find new ways to reduce your energy usage. If you are on a Pre-Payment meter the IHD will also report on your remaining credit and issue low credit alarms.
Automatic meter reads
Your smart meter will provide your supplier with the meter readings required for your energy invoicing, meaning you will no longer need to provide readings yourself.
Reduced usage = reduced cost
Your bills will be based on actual reads, so any reduction in energy use you’ve made will automatically be realised in your bill.
Smart meters are good for the environment as increased understanding of energy usage by both you and the UK energy industry will better balance supply and demand, helping to reduce our national energy footprint.
With a smart meter you can top it up around-the-clock without leaving your home via our online portal, by text, or by telephone. Rest assured cash options via local Paypoint machines are still available.
How do I get a smart meter?
All householders in Great Britain will be offered a smart meter by 2020. At Bristol Energy, we think smart meters are great, so we’ve started offering them now. We're doing this systematically – so will cover different areas and different property types as we go. This means we cannot do all areas and all property types straight away.
There are a limited number of meters available currently, but we will be starting to roll out in much higher volumes from spring 2018. If you register using the buttons below, we’ll get to you as soon as we can. If enough of your fellow Bristol Energy customers from your area request one as well, that might just bump your area up the list.
What to expect from our smart meter installation process
We’ll let you know when we start installing smart meters in your area, and someone from one of our meter installation partners will get in touch to book an appointment (don’t worry, we'll let you know in advance who will contact you, and you can opt-out of this process at any point).
The smart meter will be installed free of charge. Someone over 18 must be present for the installation of your new meter, which should take 60-90 minutes.
The work will require an interruption to your electricity and gas supply, so it is a good idea to turn off your appliances ahead of the disconnection and then remember to switch them back on after the visit.
The engineer will contact you on the day to let you know they're on their way. Please ensure that there's easy access to your meters to enable our engineers to work. The installation includes a demonstration of the system and energy efficiency guidance.
A few days after your smart meter installation, we’ll get back in touch with you to make sure that everything went OK, and whether you have any further questions.
