Help us fund homeless shelter in Bristol

23 February 2017

  • To mark Homelessness Awareness Week in Bristol, our Partnerships Manager Michael Lloyd Jones announces our new fundraising target - £5000 to help our partners Caring in Bristol launch homeless shelter in the city.

Every week, hundreds of men and women in Bristol are forced to sleep rough. Each winter they struggle to find shelter, facing long cold nights out on city streets. And every year, the problem gets worse.

The number of people spending the night in doorways, subways, parks and homeless shelters has reached unprecedented levels.

Latest numbers suggest that 100 people sleep rough each night. Even more camp on wasteland or parks, sleep in their cars or find empty buildings.

We believe everyone has the right to a warm home, which is why we offered our first partnership to Caring in Bristol - to help this small local charity to deliver more support in our home city.

Caring in Bristol works on the ground, delivering a range of projects to help look after homeless and vulnerable people in Bristol.

For every person who switches using the code “CARING001”, Bristol Energy donates £15 each for gas and electricity.

This can help support a range of projects to support homeless and vulnerable people, including:

  • Caring at Christmas –providing three hot meals a day and more than 50 beds over the festive period.
  • Growing for Bristol - growing produce all year round for homeless projects in Bristol.

So far, we’ve raised over £500 – but we’re now setting our sights a lot higher, to raise £5000 by the end of April to help fund a new homeless shelter in the city centre.

As well as raising money through switches, we teamed up to run a Christmas Wrap Shop in the Bristol Energy Hub, offering a Christmas wrapping service in return for donations to Caring in Bristol.

Our staff members volunteered during Caring at Christmas. And more of us will be committing some of our 2 volunteering days per year to the charity.

And this Friday, as part of Homelessness Awareness Week in Bristol, our MD Peter Haigh will be taking part in the annual Sleep Out, to raise awareness and money for Caring in Bristol.

We know that this is just the start, but we’re committed to using our energy to make a positive difference. And you can help.

You can switch and donate today using the code "CARING001".
